Multi
Purpose Rivendell A. Homer Hilson ride news. This lovely machine has
been making a wild variety of rides including fast, light load touring
trips 600 miles down the California coast from Northern to Southern
California in all weather conditions with and without full fenders from
Planet Bike. This winter (2009, '10) sans fenders with cyclocross tires
we started test riding saddles in some extreme off road conditions and
terrain. Here is a link to the GPS track and photos of the infamous
Gates Canyon Mix Canyon route in Solano County, California;
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=416252 This Lynch
Canyon cross ride has photos and a ride description but no GPS track;
http://www.everytrail.com/view_trip.php?trip_id=445447
The
Rivendell does not require any significant changes to the components for
such dramatic terrain differences. It is equipped with a Shimano SL
Ultegra group set with XTR rear derailleur and XTR, Mavic Open Pro
ceramic wheel set custom built. The group includes a compact crank so
the chain rings can be easily changed out for road and cross set ups
from 33 to 54 tooth ring sizes. The cassette has been an 11-34 for
cyclocross use, and 11-25 for road uses. The bike uses special Tektro
brake calipers that will accommodate tires up to 40 mm and full fenders!
Pictured at the right with WTB Cross Wolf DNA 700 x 32 tires. The Tektro
caliper type brakes worked better than cantilever brakes on Deb's BMC
CX01 cross specific bike. Those loaded up completely with mud during the
Lynch Canyon slug fest mud ride, pictures linked in previous paragraph.
The Rivendell is pictured above at the left during a rainy day ride mid
January 2010 with full fenders and Continental GP 4 Season 700 x 28
rubber. It is nice to own a bike that does so many things so well.

near Fairfield, CA in October 2009.
Sept 2009 customer email:
Dear Selle An-Atomica,
I am interested in your design. I am from the UK. I currently ride a Brooks
B17 Narrow Imperial. It suffers from insufficient stability around the
cut-out, and the shape is not optimal. Like your company, I take great care
in proper saddle angle and height adjustment, so this is not the reason for
searching for a better saddle.
Best wishes,
Ben S-H

An-Atomica carried Joff Summerfield across the USA where he encountering RAAM
racers in the eastern mountains among countless other adventures
traveling from SF down the coast, over to Death Valley, Grand Canyon,
Washington DC, NYC and Toronto. Joff is now in Toronto preparing to
depart for Lisbon, then home to London for Christmas. Photographed between
Santa Cruz and Monterey, CA after 15,000 miles and one year, ten months journey.

Watershed Leather passes final tests during the challenging Central
Coast Double May 10th. Pictured on the Giant TCR at left. Tom rode the
saddle new out of the box for 12 hrs, 43 minutes, 209 grueling miles,
nearly 14,000 feet of climbing. Pictured by itself with Standard
Laminate Copper rivets on the right.
In the first two years, we warranted 94 saddles for leather that
stretched prematurely, 27 for bent frames, 3 for broken frames, and 3
failed welds on the tension screw nut. That represents about 0.01% of
production since inception. Saddles returned for a refund represent one
tenth of 0.01%. We are introducing 4th Generation Watershed tannage in
2008 that is going to help reduce the number of saddles that stretch
prematurely. Being as this is not manmade material, we will likely have
a very small number of saddles that stretch out sooner than we'd like.
That said, the riding comfort reputation Selle An-Atomica is becoming
well known for around the world is unsurpassed. That was our goal when
research & development work begin in earnest.
Selle An-Atomica has given cyclists a saddle that allows them to
ride in comfort for the first time in their lives because the saddle is designed
to function in a way that the body moves. Now we can afford to ride more, drive

August 2007 - Selle An-Atomica conquers Paris
Brest Paris 1200km and Alpe d'Huez 4 days hence!

Riding Time approximately 70 hrs. Fastest Speed 61 kph.

at left is Tom & company during a dry spell sometime Tuesday after 9:30 pm
Monday start. I had planned to ride through to Brest, the ride mid point.
Weather was so terrible I stopped at Tinteniac to eat, shower, sleep/dry
out, eat, and go. Photo below on left are father and son farmers
in rural French countryside beyond Tinteniac Wednesday morning very early. These fellows were there cheering and
clapping as we passed so I turned around to amuse them with my meager French language skills
and the unusual Calfee Design Bamboo bike. Alpe d'Huez photo speaks for itself. This is
a permanent winners stand at the top of
this famous 21 hairpin 13 km climb in the Rhone Alpes. If you go to attempt
this climb stay at Hotel de Milan in Bourg d'Oisans, the small town at the
foot of the climb. Everything you need is on two blocks of downtown adjacent
to the hotel along the quaint stone street. There is an excellent bike shop
across from the hotel. See Jean Louis for dinner. He is the proprietor at
Restaurant de France up the street. You'll want the signature aperitif Jean
Louis makes when not stitching his hiking and riding
clothes, aperitif followed by the signature tartiflettes main dish, one of
the best cycling meals on the planet if you like potatoes and three cheeses.
The restaurant across the main highway from the Hotel on the opposite side of
the river makes excellent continental dishes and pizzas with riverside
outdoor dining. Laundry is two blocks up the cobblestones with outstanding
glacier, crepe, sausage, bread, and chocolate makers in between.

Tom Milton rode a new out of the box
development test saddle to start and finish Paris Brest Paris in 89 hours
without any saddle issues to speak of. According to PBP organizers this was either the
most difficult PBP in 50 years or in it's 116 year history. It rained every
day and night. It was chilly. It was windy. Tom rode PBP self contained
carrying his extra changes of cycling clothes, fowl weather gear, spare
parts, other essentials, and emergency food stuffs in two small Ortlieb
panniers.

after ten years of analytic testing.

Saddles
Handmade in Wisconsin, USA.
Our designs are not
retro for retro's sake. The designs are the result of four years full time
saddle R&D by an engineer cyclist and physician cyclist to objectively study
the human anatomy in motion. Saddle design fundamentals evolved as our
understanding of pelvic region dynamics improved through the analysis of
numerous test models, hours of film analysis, and consultation of various
physician specialists. See
White Papers on the
subject.
Experience the
Happy Bottom Riding Club. It is important to appreciate that the human body
presents not two Joker wild cards found in a new deck, but an entire deck of
wild cards. The marriage to the delicate pelvic basin region anatomy and
asymmetrical boney points presents an extreme challenges. Consumer feedback
is proving that our design is very accommodating, functional, comfortable in
the extreme. We endeavor
through customer service to help riders at all levels find comfort on their
bike, this being a combination of a fundamentally good saddle design and
ergonomics, good all around fit. To that end our saddles come
with proprietary, illustrated adjustment procedures.
The designs
represent more than 4 years full time effort, >40,000 R&D test miles
in all weather conditions and help from people too numerous to mention. We
estimate 800,000 - 1,200,000 miles were ridden by consumers during 2005 with
nearly 100% reporting surprising comfort, satisfaction and riding position
improvements after following our special adjustment procedures shipped with
each saddle. Our completely new designs also addressed suggestions
riders have shared during 18 months of market study through limited sales of
various handmade models.

George Bush gave
up running a few years ago due to a knee injury, but the 59 year-old likes
to keep fit. He told USA Today's Sal Ruibal, "I love exercise. Prior
to learning about mountain biking, I was a jogger. And then, like a lot of
baby boomers, my knees gave out. I believe that mountain biking is going to
be an outlet for a lot of people my age. I'm 59, and people are going to
realize you get as much aerobic exercise - if not more - on the mountain
bike without being hobbled." Cycling News August 16, 2005
